TIMOTHY AND JAYNE DONAHUE CARDIAC SURGERY PROGRAM
A Center of Excellence ranked among the top 10 percent of U.S. health care
organizations for outstanding cardiac care, Jupiter Medical Center’s
cardiovascular program has made dramatic strides in recent years. An array
of sophisticated new technologies and techniques is saving and transforming
the lives of people with congenital, acute and chronic heart conditions.
Thanks in large part to generous gifts, we launched the Timothy and Jayne
Donahue Cardiac Surgery Program in January 2019, which will not only deliver
excellence in cardiac care, but allow us to become a Level II Cardiac
Care Center.
The Level II Cardiac Care designation will allow our physicians to perform
more advanced procedures on patients with more serious cardiac issues
such as cardiac bypass and valve replacement and repairs, and advanced
interventional procedures that include Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement
(TAVR) and advanced ablations for atrial fibrillation. These procedures
achieve lifesaving results with minimal discomfort, and faster healing
times with lower risk than traditional surgery. In April 2020 Dr. Arthur
Katz, medical director of cardiac surgery at Jupiter Medical Center performed
the first open-heart surgery, setting the stage for an even more comprehensive
Robson Heart & Vascular Institute.
ROBSON HEART & VASCULAR INSTITUTE
The second phase in cardiovascular care will expand on the foundation we
built through our Cardiac Surgery Program to include an Advanced Arrhythmia
Center (electrophysiology), a Cardiovascular ICU, a Structural Heart Program,
a Vascular Disease Program and more, thanks to a landmark gift in 2018
that named the Robson Heart & Vascular Institute. Ultimately, the
Robson Heart & Vascular Institute at Jupiter Medical Center will become
a premier center for cardiovascular care comprised of multiple Centers
of Excellence.
VASCULAR DISEASE PROGRAM
Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD) is often overlooked when more serious
cardiac disease is present. The Vascular Disease Program will include
a team of specialized physicians trained to detect abnormalities in the
vascular system and whose practice focuses specifically on vascular disease.
CARDIOVASCULAR INTENSIVE CARE UNIT
Part of offering open-heart surgery will include converting existing space
to build a Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CICU). The CICU will support
the state-of-the-art Cardiac Surgery Program, providing physicians and
patients with the latest in recovery techniques and technologies. Additionally,
Jupiter Medical Center will recruit highly trained critical care nurses
to meet the complex needs of very sick patients.
ADVANCED ARRHYTHMIA CENTER
With the addition of a new electrophysiology lab, Jupiter Medical Center
will be able to perform electrophysiology studies to diagnose and treat
abnormal heartbeats and arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation. The results
from these studies will allow cardiologists to determine whether a patient
will need medicine, a pacemaker, an implantable cardioverter defibrillator
(ICD), cardiac ablation or surgery.
STRUCTURAL HEART PROGRAM
The development and launch of a Structural Heart Program will deliver the
best possible treatment plan and outcomes for patients with structural
heart conditions, including treatment
of conditions affecting the valves and other vital structures of the heart.
ENHANCED CARDIAC REHABILITATION PROGRAM
At Jupiter Medical Center, the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program is a robust
program that includes monitored exercise, nutritional counseling and emotional
support to help most heart disease patients lower their risk of future
heart problems by making changes to improve their health. In the next
phase, Jupiter Medical Center’s cardiac rehab will continue offering
advanced Cardiac Rehabilitation for patients recovering from open-heart
surgery, with enhancements that will include a cardiac prevention program,
stress management, a nutrition education program and more.
